16 Cloud Computing and IT Acronyms You Really Should Know

  4. CDN — Content Delivery Network
    A globally distributed network of servers that delivers content to end-users based on user location, webpage origin, and content delivery server.
  5. DaaS — Desktop as a Service
    A virtualization service hosted in the cloud that enables users access to their virtual desktop and applications from any location utilizing any device.
  6. DRaaS — Disaster Recovery as a Service
    Empowers users to recover quickly after a disaster with replication and hosting of physical or virtual servers.
  7. FTP — File Transfer Protocol
    Commonly used protocol for exchanging large amounts of data through a private or public network. It can also be used to send configuration files to network devices.
  8. IaaS — Infrastructure as a Service
    A form of cloud computing that provides virtualized computing resources over the Internet. For example, Internal Business Networks, Virtual Data Center, and Cloud Hosting.
  9. IP — Internet Protocol
    The method by which data is sent from one computer to another via the Internet. Every computer on the Internet has at least one IP address that uniquely identifies it from other computers online.
  10. PaaS — Platform as a Service
    A cloud computing service that provides a platform upon which users can develop, run, and manage applications. PaaS eliminates the need to build and maintain the infrastructure necessary to develop and launch an app.
  11. SaaS — Software as a Service
    Software licensing and delivery method in which software is centrally hosted and available to end users on a subscription basis.
  12. SSL — Secure Sockets Layer
    Standard security technology that establishes an encrypted link between a web server and browser, ensuring all data shared between the two remains private.
  13. VDI — Virtual Desktop Infrastructure
    Virtualization technology that hosts a desktop operating system on a centralized server in a data center.
  14. VPC — Virtual Private Cloud
    An on-demand configurable pool of shared computing resources assigned within a public cloud environment, with a designated level of isolation between users.
  15. VPN — Virtual Private Network
    Allows users to send and receive data across a public network as if connected to a private network.  
  16. VPS — Virtual Private Server
    A VPS runs its own copy of an operating system, allowing users to access, install, and operate software that runs on that OS.
